Thanksgiving Crash Kills Former NJ Hockey Captain Gavin Barooah, 19

The victim killed in a Morris County crash on Thanksgiving Night, Nov. 28 has been identified as a 19-year-old former hockey player.

Gavin Barooah, of Ledgewood, was behind the wheel of a Mercedes Benz when his vehicle collided with a Jeep around 8 p.m. at Morris and Sussex turnpikes in Randolph, according to Meghan Knab, a spokesperson for the county prosecutor's office.

The driver of the Jeep was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

"Today, our hearts are heavy," the Official Account of RHS Ice Hockey Booster Association said on Instagram. "The Roxbury hockey community learned today of the passing of a friend, teammate, and captain- Gavin Barooah 2005-2024."

Barooah was a former Roxbury High School varsity hockey player, having earned multiple honors in his junior and senior years. According to NJ Advance Media, he scored 19 goals and had 20 assists during his high school hockey career.

The collision remains under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office, and Randolph Police Department.
